Zonta Club of Seguin helps bring a piece of women's history to Texas
The Zonta Club of Seguin, USA, helped host the Golden Flyer II and the Driving the Vote for Equality Tour on 22-23 March. As part of the national tour, the “Golden Flyer II” — a refurbished 1914 Saxon roadster, recreates the historic journey of two suffragists who, in 1916, traveled more than 10,000 miles across a largely roadless America to rally support for women’s right to vote. Several Ford Model T cars were also brought in for display by local Zontian Laurie Deatherage and her car club. Photo opportunities and book signings were also part of the event.
Mayor and local Zontian Donna also signed a proclamation for Women’s History Month on the steps of Seguin City Hall, and was joined by Zonta Club of Seguin President Susan Monahan, Susan Nourse and Jeryl Schriever, the two women recreating the historic journey. Schriever is the author of "Driving the Vote for Women: An American Journey for Suffrage." The book is about Alice Burke and Nell Richardson who in 1916 drove cross-country to promote voting rights for women.
