Zonta Club of Taranto celebrates Amelia Earhart Day

On 27 February, in the Hall of Representation of the Province of Taranto, the Zonta Club of Taranto, Italy, led by Club President Antonella De Marco, will honor lawyer Domenica Leone with the Amelia Earhart 2025 Award.

Each year, in honor of Amelia Earhart Day, Zonta International encourages clubs worldwide to reflect on the legacy of the pioneering aviator, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Despite nearly 85 years since Earhart’s passing, women remain underrepresented in the aerospace industry, comprising only 25% of the workforce. Through this award, Zonta continues its mission to support and recognize women excelling in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The club selected Domenica Leone, a distinguished Tarantina lawyer born in 1973, for her notable career and recent appointment to the Magistral Council of ISFOA Free and Private Unitelematica of Swiss Law. She has also been co-opted into the Academic Senate, where she launched Europe’s first and only degree program dedicated to condominium administration.

Domenica's legal career spans multiple high-profile roles, including lawyer at the Supreme Court of Cassation, legal representative at the Courts of the Vatican City State and lawyer of the Holy Route. She is also president of the Inclusion Hub Permanent Observatory on Disability, leading research and initiatives on social inclusion and accessibility in urban planning, healthcare and education. Additionally, she serves as Director General of Educational Opificium, providing professional training and President of the School of High Training and Specialized Studies for Professionals.

To further commemorate Amelia Earhart’s legacy and Leone’s achievements, Zonta Taranto has launched the "Sulle Ali di Amelia" (On Amelia’s Wings) contest for secondary school students, led by Professor Daniela Piepoli.
