Zonta Clubs of Makati and Environs and Cavite hosts STEM forum

In celebration of Zonta's Women and Girls in Science initiative, the Zonta Clubs of Makati and Environs and Cavite, Philippines, hosted “Breaking Barriers: Empowering Young Women to Lead in STEM” on 26 February, at Atheneum School. The forum engaged more than 150 senior high school students from various academic strands, emphasizing the importance of STEM education for future careers.

The event featured distinguished speakers Elgene Bermudez and Kristel Gayle Abriol, both pursuing master’s degrees in applied mathematics at Ateneo de Manila University. Bermudez, a Women in Business awardee, and Abriol, a Women in STEM awardee, shared insights on how STEM addresses real-world challenges such as climate change, finance, and healthcare while fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Kristel highlighted the underrepresentation of women in STEM, noting that women make up only 35 percent of STEM graduates globally, according to UNESCO. The speakers stressed the need for greater female participation, stating that diversity fuels innovation and empowers future generations. They also encouraged students to explore scholarships, leadership programs, internships and networking opportunities within STEM fields.

Offering practical advice, Elgene and Kristel urged students to embrace challenges and learn from failures, find mentors and build a strong support system, stay curious and continuously seek knowledge, and get involved early in clubs, internships and online courses.

The interactive session allowed students to ask questions and gain deeper insights into pursuing STEM careers. Many left the event inspired and motivated to explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Organized by Makati and Environs Club President Joanne Zapanta Andrada and Cavite Club President Diana Laserna Casejo, with contributions from Attorney Ina Magpale, the forum reinforced Zonta’s commitment to advancing women in STEM. Through initiatives like this, Zonta clubs continue to break barriers, support female leaders and drive gender equality in STEM fields.
