Zonta Club of Colombo II tackles Sri Lanka’s CKDu crisis with clean water initiative

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) is a severe health crisis in Sri Lanka, especially in the "dry zone," where it devastates agricultural communities and places even young students at risk. The disease has led to considerable economic and social challenges, particularly for families who have lost their main providers.

Zonta International, in partnership with the United Nations, advocates for clean water and sanitation as essential human rights. In response, the Zonta Club of Colombo II, Sri Lanks, has installed water filtration systems in over 90 schools, providing safe drinking water to approximately 100,000 people.

To address urgent needs in Rajanganaya and Thambuththegama, the club recently installed a 1,000-litre Reverse Osmosis Water Softening Filter at Harischandra Maha Vidyalaya, benefiting 700 students and teachers. Despite this progress, eight more schools in these regions require similar support. The club is seeking donors to expand this crucial initiative, ensuring every child has access to safe drinking water and a healthier future.
