Zonta Club of Bunbury Inc hosts inspiring International Women’s Day celebration

The Zonta Club of Bunbury Inc, Australia, hosted an unforgettable International Women’s Day breakfast on 9 March at the Sanctuary Golf Resort, where 200 attendees gathered to honor women’s achievements, discuss pressing gender equality issues and recognize outstanding community leaders.

The event featured a compelling keynote address by Dr. Kim Farrington, Co-Head of Department at Perth’s Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC). Farrington addressed the growing link between internet pornography and sexual assault, providing research-backed insights and practical strategies to combat this escalating crisis.

Club President Amanda Whittle highlighted both progress and challenges in the pursuit of gender equality. Reflecting on the advancements made since the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, she cautioned against complacency, urging attendees to be the generation that closes the gender gap.

A key moment of the celebration was the recognition of four remarkable women, honored as Bunbury’s “Hidden Gems” for their dedication to community service:

  • Chef Brooke Cochrane, recognized for her contributions to Chefs’ Long Table Charity Lunches.
  • Yvonne Irwin, honored for her tireless fundraising efforts with the Salvation Army South West.
  • Marleen Milne, acknowledged for her compassionate work at the Bunbury Regional Hospital’s Campus Carers’ Group.
  • Deidre Wasley, recognized for fostering over 300 children as a foster and respite carer.

Each honoree received a yellow Zonta rose, a certificate, and a donation to the Zonta Foundation for Women in their name.

The event also spotlighted emerging female leaders, as Area Director Kimberley Robbins presented the Zonta Bunbury 2025 Young Women in Leadership Award to Isabella Chalker, and the Josephine Spaull Performing Arts Scholarship to Auri Mahar, celebrating the next generation of inspiring women.

With a blend of reflection, recognition and empowerment, the club’s International Women’s Day event reinforced the club’s commitment to advancing gender equality and supporting women’s leadership in the community.
