Zonta Club of Makati and Environs holds insightful webinar

On 6 April, the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs, Philippines, hosted a virtual webinar titled “Ripple Effects: How Global Conflict Impacts Local Communities,” featuring Attorney Ina Magpale-Asirit.

The session brought together members and participants to explore how global geopolitical tensions can create far-reaching economic and social impacts felt at the local level.

Magpale-Asirit highlighted the significance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route through which a substantial portion of the world’s energy supply passes. Disruptions in this region can affect fuel availability, increase global prices and influence economies worldwide.

For the Philippines, which relies heavily on imported fuel, these global shifts can contribute to rising fuel costs, increased electricity rates and higher prices of basic goods.

The webinar outlined key considerations, including the country’s energy vulnerability due to import dependence and the broader economic effects of rising oil prices on transportation, food production and inflation. It also examined the disproportionate impact on off-grid and island communities, which often depend on diesel-powered electricity.

The session further discussed various government responses, including energy emergency measures, market interventions and contingency planning aimed at addressing supply and price stability.

In addition to policy discussions, participants were encouraged to consider practical steps to help manage energy use, such as conserving electricity, reducing unnecessary fuel consumption, using energy-efficient appliances and exploring renewable energy options.

As noted during the session, “We don’t import war—but we import its consequences,” underscoring the interconnected nature of global events and their local effects.

Through initiatives like this webinar, the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs continues to promote awareness, education and community engagement on issues that impact daily life, reinforcing its commitment to building a better world for women and girls.
