Zonta Club of Makati and Environs holds Amelia Earhart Day celebration
The Zonta Club of Makati and Environs Foundation, Inc., Philippines, successfully held its Amelia Earhart Day Celebration on 27 January via Zoom, featuring the timely and inspiring talk “Courage in the Skies, Service in the Seas: The Modern Meaning of Amelia Earhart’s Legacy.”
The well-attended virtual event gathered Area 5 Director Susan Lim, members from different Zonta Clubs in Area 5, Golden Z Clubs, students and faculty members from PATTS College of Aeronautics and club members, reflecting strong intergenerational and multi-sectoral support for Zonta’s mission of empowering women.
The keynote address was delivered by Commodore Christine Pauline Bergaño-Diciano, the first female pilot of the Philippine Coast Guard and the only female Air Station Commander of Oplan Matatag, the West Philippine Sea security program. Drawing from her extensive experience as a pilot, pioneering officer, and woman leader, Commodore Diciano reframed Amelia Earhart’s legacy beyond aviation milestones.
“Courage without service is fleeting, and service without courage cannot endure,” she shared, emphasizing that true leadership is anchored in responsibility and commitment to the common good.
Highlighting the Philippines’ identity as both a maritime and aviation nation, the speaker underscored the inseparable relationship between the skies and the seas, stressing the need for ethical, inclusive leadership in aviation, maritime security, trade, and humanitarian response. She also addressed the persistent gender gap in traditionally male-dominated fields, affirming that women’s participation strengthens institutions.
“When women serve as pilots, officers, engineers, policymakers and educators, we do not weaken institutions—we strengthen them,” she said.
Addressing young people and future leaders, Commodore Diciano delivered a resonant message: “You do not have to choose between courage and compassion. You do not have to wait for permission to serve.”
The celebration reaffirmed the club's commitment to making women’s leadership normal, trusted, and indispensable and highlighted how Amelia Earhart’s legacy continues to inspire women to lead with courage rooted in service.
The Amelia Earhart Day celebration served as a powerful reminder that true courage lies not only in reaching new heights, but in using those heights to uplift and protect others.
