Lifesaving efforts, top honors and advancing education

The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, Philippines, continues to exemplify service, leadership and advocacy through impactful community work and outstanding recognition.

In September, the club partnered with Cagayan State University–Carig Campus and the Philippine Red Cross for a blood donation drive themed “Dugo Mo, Buhay Ko.” Held at the CSU Conference Hall, the event collected 313 bags of blood, providing vital medical support for women and girls in need. Organized by Zontians Sugar Macarilay and Dang Fortuno, the initiative supported Zonta International’s “Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women” campaign and highlighted the lifesaving impact of volunteerism.

“Every bag of blood represents a chance for life,” said Club Past President Racquel Sumabat-Arnedo, Service Committee chair. “We are grateful to all who gave selflessly for others.”

At the biennial District 17 Conference, led by President Josefina T. Sedano, the club emerged as one of the most awarded clubs among 91 in the district. The club earned the Gold Award for Outstanding Club (Area Level), along with district recognitions for Outstanding Service (Merit) and Outstanding Zonta Says NOW Project (Merit). The club was also honored for sponsoring the Zonta Club of Northern Cagayan and Apayao, under the leadership of Country Club Creator Attorney Mila Catabay-Lauigan, who also chairs the club's Sponsoring, Organizing and Mentoring (SOM) Committee.

Zontians Catabay-Lauigan, Raquel Sumabat-Arnedo, Susan Carag, Ma. Socorro Sabban, Edna Santos and Marietta Reyes were recognized for 25–30 years of service, while flowers and prayers were offered in memory of Past President Florentina Ancheta and Treasurer Laura Utleg during the Memorial Service.

At the same conference, Attorney Catabay-Lauigan delivered two presentations: “The Process of Creating New Clubs” and “Gender Issues on Education in Rural Areas.” She emphasized expanding Zonta’s reach to underserved areas and promoting access to education for rural girls through scholarships, dormitories and community partnerships.

“Championing girls’ education is not just a matter of fairness—it’s a key strategy for achieving sustainable development,” she said.

Under Club President Sedano’s leadership, the Central Tuguegarao club continues to advance Zonta International’s mission of building a better world for women and girls.
