Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao champions youth empowerment and expands memberships

The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, Philippines, continues to champion youth empowerment and expand its reach through a series of impactful events held at Cagayan State University (CSU), Andrews Campus.

On 6 May, the club hosted a voter education and human rights forum attended by nearly 70 Legal Management students. The forum, aimed at promoting civic responsibility and encouraging youth participation in democratic processes, featured Chief Information Officer Louella A. Tomas of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) as the keynote speaker. Tomas delivered a compelling lecture on informed voting and the role of human rights in nation-building.

“Young citizens must understand their power in shaping our country’s future through the ballot,” Louella said, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and protecting human dignity.

The forum also drew the attention of the 2025 European Union Election Monitoring Team, signaling international support for free, fair and transparent elections in the Philippines.

Club Vice President and Advocacy Committee Chair Mitoy Cayosa said the event forms part of the club’s broader campaign to engage and educate young voters.

“We believe that building an informed electorate starts with our students,” Mitoy said. “Empowering them with the right knowledge enables them to make decisions that protect democracy and uphold human rights.”

CSU Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Theresa Dimalanta, a Zontian herself, facilitated venue arrangements and voiced her support.

“CSU is proud to host activities like this that align with our mission of developing socially responsible citizens,” she said. “This partnership with the Zonta club reflects our shared goal of strengthening democratic values among our students.”

Club President Josefina T. Sedano noted that the forum is part of the club’s ongoing efforts to uplift young people, especially women, through education and civic engagement.

Later in the month, the Zonta club returned to CSU to host an orientation for prospective members. The evening program introduced attendees to Zonta’s mission and values, and included a presentation of current and prospective members.

Attorney Mila Catabay-Lauigan, past area director and chair of the SOM and Membership Committee, led the formal orientation. Area Director Judge Racquel Reyes-Aglaua discussed the rewards and responsibilities of Zonta membership, while President Sedano explained the membership dues structure.

Club members, including Dr. Dimalanta, Hyacinth Joy Acluba and Ludivina Cauilan, shared personal testimonials, followed by an open forum moderated by Zontian Anette Pedro. The program concluded with a closing message from Past President Connie Gadduang Reyes.

Around eight prospective members participated in the orientation, underscoring the club’s commitment to empowering women through service and advocacy, while fostering a strong and inclusive Zonta community.
