Winds of spring

The Zonta Club of Hangö-Hanko, Finland, hosted its annual wellness fair at the end of March at Hanko City Hall, continuing a beloved tradition that brings together community members, local entrepreneurs and advocates for mental health.

This year’s event followed a familiar format, offering wellness entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their services to the public. Entry to the fair was free, with funds raised through the sale of raffle tickets. Exhibitors generously donated prizes valued between €50 and €250.

The fair also featured a series of performances and a special guest interview with Sa Myer Oo, Finland’s 2024 Refugee of the Year. Originally from Myanmar, Sa Myer Oo arrived in Hanko at age 11 and now resides in Vaasa, where she works as a peer expert supporting other immigrants and students adjusting to life in Finland. During the interview, she reflected on her journey, sharing how she found her voice and independence through the encouragement of mentors who inspired her to pursue education and challenge herself. She emphasized the importance of supportive events like the wellness fair in uplifting refugee girls and fostering community connections.

Despite a smaller turnout compared to the previous year—attributed to the first sunny spring day drawing many outdoors—the fair generated significant interest in the products and services offered. In total, the event raised €1,100, which will be directed toward preventive mental health initiatives for children and youth in the Hanko area.
