Understanding women’s rights behind bars: Legal pathways for rehabilitation and reintegration
In celebration of National Women’s Month, the Zonta Club of Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, was invited by retired SF04 Carmelo B. Andrada, warden of the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Jail (NVPJ), to lead a discussion on women’s rights, mental health and legal awareness for female detainees, jail employees and criminology students. Themed “You Are My Shero!”, the event underscored the importance of empowerment and rehabilitation for women in detention.
Prosecutor Marion M. Cojpag, a member of the club, served as the guest speaker and addressed the unique challenges faced by women in detention. She presented a comprehensive overview of their legal rights, emphasizing access to legal aid, due process and the importance of knowing their entitlements while incarcerated.
The session also introduced available rehabilitation programs aimed at supporting detainees’ personal growth, vocational training and mental well-being. Marion discussed livelihood opportunities and reintegration strategies for women upon release, offering guidance on legal referrals, public attorney access and case review processes.
Highlighting the significance of education, livelihood training and mental health support, she encouraged participants to see rehabilitation as a holistic approach to reentry into society. The discussion also stressed self-care and resilience as key factors in successful reintegration.
The club reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening legal education initiatives, advocating for gender-responsive justice and partnering with local agencies to enhance rehabilitation and psychosocial support for incarcerated women. The club continues to call for policy reforms and alternatives to incarceration that prioritize rehabilitation and dignity.
