Advocating for incarcerated women

Zonta South Australia clubs, led by Julie Halifax of the Zonta Club of Adelaide and Lindy Berketa of the Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders, recently collaborated to host a screening of "Songs Inside," a powerful documentary by South Australian filmmaker Shalom Almond.

Songs Inside chronicles the transformative journey of women incarcerated at Adelaide Women’s Prison, who, over six months, discover the healing power of music. Through their creative process, the women confront deep-rooted struggles with trauma and addiction, demonstrating that even within the confines of prison, music can serve as a universal force for hope and healing. Led by Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates, their efforts culminate in a historic performance—the largest concert ever staged within an Australian prison—featuring the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

More than just a film, "Songs Inside" anchors a bold social impact campaign aimed at challenging societal perceptions of incarcerated women and advocating for systemic reform within Australia’s justice system.

Funds raised by Zonta South Australia will support this group’s advocacy and social impact initiatives, further amplifying the message of the film.

The event highlighted the power of collaboration among Zonta clubs to make a meaningful difference in building a better world for women and girls.
