Save Mother Earth: Mangrove tree planting, Part II

Two and a half years after launching their mangrove planting project on 28 October, 2022, under then-President Rose Lim, the Zonta Club of Greater Rizal II, Philippines, continues to reaffirm its commitment to environmental stewardship. Now led by President Shirley Licup, the club has embraced the project as one of its sustaining initiatives, recognizing that ongoing efforts are vital to protect nearby communities.

On 10 April, 2025, the club, together with 30 dedicated volunteers, successfully planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings at the coastal site of the Technological Institute of the Philippines in San Juan II, Noveleta, Cavite. Zonta members were joined by LDS Earth Stewardship Philippines Chairman Anthony Cama and Vice-Chairman Danilo Soleta, as well as Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources representative Rolando “Olan” Palustre. The project will benefit approximately 400 families living in nearby coastal communities.

The mangroves serve a critical purpose, acting as natural barriers to reduce erosion, absorb storm surges, filter pollutants and provide vital habitats for marine life. Beyond the environmental impact, the initiative also raised awareness about climate action and community resilience, aligning with Zonta’s broader mission to build a better world for women, girls and families.

“Mangrove planting is more than just an environmental act—it’s a symbol of resilience, growth and interconnectedness,” said President Licup. “Through hands-on action, we are championing women’s rights, climate action and community development while expanding Zonta’s visibility.”

The community response was overwhelmingly positive, with one local resident sharing, “Thank you for doing this project. We feel a lot safer now.”

This initiative stands as a powerful reminder that when civic organizations and local communities unite, they can plant not only trees, but also hope for future generations.
