Relief assistance to families displaced by floods

The Zonta Club I of Colombo, Sri Lanka, mobilized emergency relief efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, which displaced thousands of families and destroyed homes and livelihoods, disproportionately affecting women. Through targeted fundraising, club members provided immediate assistance to flood-affected communities, distributing more than 700 meals and 50 dry ration packs—enough to sustain families for a week—along with bedding, mosquito nets and essential sanitary supplies.

Relief efforts were carried out in partnership with Caritas Sri Lanka and World Vision Lanka, ensuring aid reached families sheltering in schools and temporary evacuation centers. The club also collaborated with Humedica to supply medical items to emergency health facilities serving displaced populations.

Recognizing that climate-related disasters deepen existing gender inequalities, the Zonta Club I of Colombo emphasized women’s heightened vulnerability during displacement, including disrupted access to services, sanitation and traditional support systems, as well as increased risks of gender-based violence. While addressing urgent needs, the club has begun planning recovery support for women entrepreneurs affected by the disaster.

World Vision Lanka acknowledged the initiative, noting that the club's timely support provided essential food, hygiene items and non-food supplies to 60 flood-affected families in Mullaitivu District, helping restore dignity and stability during a critical period.
