Planting legacy and partnership

The Zonta Club of Pampanga, Philippines, joined fellow Zontians from Zonta International District 17 Area 1 in the “Balayong Cherry Blossoms” Tree Planting Activity on 12 May at Gate 1 of Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo. The activity was held in partnership with the GHQ & Headquarters Service Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and aligned with the environmental advocacy efforts of the “Zonta Says NOW!” campaign.

Representing Zonta Club of Pampanga President Gina Millan, members participated in the initiative promoting environmental stewardship, sustainability and collaboration among Zonta clubs and partner organizations.

Before the ceremonial planting, officers and ranking officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines welcomed participants and conducted a briefing on the Balayong, or Cherry Blossom, trees. The discussion covered the characteristics of the trees, their growth process and the years required for them to fully bloom. Participants also asked whether they would be allowed to return in the future to observe the trees’ progress. AFP representative Major Charity shared that future visits would be permitted with prior coordination and authorization for entry into the camp.

Following the briefing, participants moved to the designated planting site in front of the AFP office grounds. The Zonta Club of Pampanga planted three Balayong Cherry Blossom trees with assistance from AFP servicemen and army personnel. Nameplates recognizing the sponsoring Zonta clubs were installed beside the newly planted trees, while other participating clubs also planted trees based on the number they sponsored for the project.

The activity continued with the watering of the trees, followed by club photo opportunities, an Area 1 group photo and commemorative photos with officers and representatives from the GHQ & Headquarters Service Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The event fostered camaraderie, enthusiasm and a shared commitment to environmental preservation.

After the outdoor activity, participants returned to the meeting area where breakfast was served by the hosts. Zontians shared fellowship over pandesal, egg omelette and butter while continuing conversations with fellow members and AFP representatives.

The program also featured a presentation on the history, functions and ceremonial roles of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Major Charity Talledo facilitated the discussion and presentation, engaging participants through a slide presentation and dialogue session.

Also present during the activity were Area Director Rowena Plan, Incoming Area Director Zeny Yao, Area Secretary Dolores Castillo and representatives from the Zonta Club of Marikina, Zonta Club of Antipolo, Zonta Club of Quezon City, Zonta Club of Valle Verde, Zonta Club of Greater Rizal I and Zonta Club of Manila I.
