A Lunch That Took Off: Celebrating Amelia Earhart Day in Perth

The Zonta Club of Perth Inc, Australia, celebrated Amelia Earhart Day with a relaxed and lively lunch that helped bring Amelia’s story to life, especially for newer members. Hosted at the home of member Carole Theobald, the informal gathering was all about learning by doing and sharing Zonta spirit. Members took turns flying Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10E on a flight simulator, guided by Carole’s husband, David. Many were surprised by how tricky the twin-engine tail-dragger was to fly, giving everyone a new appreciation of Amelia’s skill, courage and determination. The simulator was set to places Amelia had flown, while slideshows and posters around the house filled in her remarkable life story. Quizzes, paper plane making and the reading of the Amelia Earhart Day proclamation added to the fun. By the end of the lunch, everyone had learned a lot and felt more confident talking about Amelia Earhart, the Zonta Fellowship and why Zonta’s support for women in STEM really matters.
