Zonta Club of Isabela strengthens OFW empowerment and women's health

Demonstrating its strong commitment to empowering women and supporting Filipino workers abroad, the Zonta Club of Isabela, Philippines, met with key officials of the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong on 25 September to finalize plans for a landmark event promoting the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). The advocacy initiative, scheduled for 16 November, will spotlight the unique challenges and contributions of women in the migrant workforce.

The effort stems from a formal Memorandum of Agreement between the Zonta Club of Isabela and the Department of Migrant Workers Region 2 (DMW-R02). The collaboration unites Zonta’s grassroots advocacy with the government’s mission to protect and empower Filipinos working overseas.

Present at the strategic meeting were Consul General Romulo Victor Israel, Consul Von Ryan Ferrera, and Assistant Labor Attaché Antonio Villafuerte, whose participation affirmed the full support of the Philippine diplomatic and labor offices in Hong Kong. Representing Zonta were the club’s officers, joined by partner Attorney Mila Lauigan of the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, Philippines, underscoring the solidarity of Zonta chapters in the Cagayan Valley working across borders for a common cause.

As preparations continue, the upcoming November event is expected to serve as a cornerstone of empowerment for the Filipino community in Hong Kong, illustrating how collaboration between civic groups and government institutions can create a meaningful impact for the nation’s modern-day heroes.

In a related initiative, the Zonta Club of Isabela expressed its gratitude to Mallig, Isabela Mayor Jose Philip “JP” Calderon for leading an inspiring discussion on the vital role of health in advancing women’s empowerment.

Mayor Calderon emphasized that when women have access to proper healthcare, they unlock their full potential to lead, educate and uplift their communities. His message echoed the club's belief that a better world for women and girls begins with meeting their fundamental needs, especially health.
