Zonta Club II of Colombo supports women entrepreneurs recovering from Cyclone Ditwah
The Zonta Club II of Colombo, Sri Lanka, launched a recovery initiative to support women entrepreneurs whose businesses were devastated by Cyclone Ditwah in the country’s central regions.
The powerful storm brought strong winds and flooding that reached heights of 18 to 20 feet, causing widespread destruction. Many small traders lost their stock and equipment just before the festive season, leaving businesses unable to operate.
Rather than focusing solely on emergency relief, the club prioritized long-term recovery by helping women-led businesses rebuild their livelihoods. The initiative focused on repairing damaged machinery and workspaces and supporting the repurchase of raw materials needed to restart operations.
Within 12 days of the cyclone, the first grant was distributed. To date, the project has assisted 23 women entrepreneurs in restarting their businesses.
Most beneficiaries have resumed operations and regained average monthly incomes comparable to their pre-cyclone levels, helping restore financial stability for their families. While some have exceeded previous income levels, others continue to face challenges due to delayed state assistance and ongoing weather-related disruptions.
The initiative also increased awareness of Zonta International and the Zonta Club II of Colombo within the country. By responding quickly to community needs and engaging directly with local stakeholders, the club reinforced its commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality.
The project remains ongoing, with media coverage scheduled for early March. The club has also implemented a social media campaign highlighting the initiative, introducing beneficiaries and sharing their progress, which has generated strong engagement and expanded the program’s impact.
