Local YWPA Award winner receives letter from New Zealand prime minister

Zonta Club of Hervey Bay Inc’s 2019 Young Women in Public Affairs Awardee, Ellie Harrington, received a personal letter of encouragement from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

In accepting her award earlier this year, Ellie acknowledged the leadership of the New Zealand prime minister in her speech. Word of this reached Jacinda Ardern and in a lovely token of recognition, she wrote a personal letter to Ellie commending her for her award and encouraging her future endeavors.

Robin Rayner, vice president of the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay Inc, District 22, said club members were very proud of Ellie.

“The Young Women in Public Affairs Award recognizes young women aged 16 to 19 for their commitment to volunteerism, volunteer leadership achievements, and dedication to empowering women worldwide,” Robin said. “Ellie’s leadership as school captain of Urangan State High School and her community involvement made her a worthy recipient of our award and we’re thrilled that she has had this recognition from someone she admires."

Club members look forward to watching Ellie’s future achievements.

The Zonta Club of Hervey Bay Inc annually recognizes young women through the Young Women in Public Affairs Award and involves young women in other initiatives. The award is publicly presented at a high tea with attendees from many walks of life, and entertainment provided by young local women. A member of the Butchella people, traditional owners of the land, welcomes people each year and provides information about the role of women traditionally. This initiative brings community awareness to the young women leaders in the local community and the work of Zonta locally and internationally.
