Zonta Club of Kankakee responds to tornado devastation

Following an EF3 tornado and accompanying hailstorm that struck Kankakee County on 10 March, members of the Zonta Club of Kankakee mobilized to support recovery efforts across the community.

The storm resulted in one fatality, while another individual died in an accident during post-storm damage assessment. Officials reported that 40 homes were completely destroyed and more than 900 sustained significant to major damage. Hundreds of vehicles were also damaged or destroyed by hail. In a county already facing financial challenges, the impact has been described as severe, with recovery expected to take months or years.

In response, 27 members of the Zonta Club of Kankakee, USA, contributed in various ways. 14 members volunteered service hours, assisting with property clean-up, preparing and serving meals, and organizing and distributing food boxes. 21 members made financial donations to the Red Cross and other relief organizations, while nine donated food and personal care items.

Additional efforts included a member and her husband opening their business—located near the tornado’s path—as a temporary site for supply and meal distribution. Another member offered two available rental properties to families who lost their homes, providing housing support for several months.

Kankakee members support survivors of sexual assault

The club also continued its advocacy work. During its April meeting, members dressed in teal to show support for survivors of sexual assault, using the initiative as part of a social media awareness campaign.
