Zonta Club of Hualien turns 38th anniversary into flood relief effort
The Zonta Club of Hualien, Taiwan, marked its 38th anniversary by turning celebration into action, leading a major disaster-relief effort for residents of Datong Village in Guangfu Township following severe flooding.
In partnership with the Zonta Club of Taipei I, Taipei II, Taipei III, New Taipei City and Taoyuan, the club successfully mobilized donations for 500 water dispensers to support families working to restore their homes and access clean drinking water. The initiative was designed to spark further community giving and demonstrate solidarity with flood-affected residents.
When flooding first struck Guangfu Township, Zonta Club of Hualien President Liping Peng was overseas but immediately coordinated NT$300,000 in emergency meal assistance. Upon her return, she convened the club’s board and secured unanimous approval to redirect planned anniversary activities toward disaster response instead.
After assessing conditions on the ground and consulting with Datong Village residents and village head Chiu Jinzhong, President Peng identified water dispensers as one of the most practical and urgently needed resources. The club then launched a targeted appeal for support, quickly receiving enthusiastic backing from Zonta clubs across Taiwan, enabling the full delivery of 500 units.
To ensure an orderly and dignified distribution, the club implemented a voucher system that allowed residents to collect water dispensers efficiently without long waiting times. Members of the Zonta Club of Hualien, together with leaders from Zonta Taipei I and Zonta Taipei III, worked side by side to ensure smooth coordination. Residents received the supplies promptly and expressed gratitude for the timely support.
President Peng said the initiative was especially meaningful as it coincided with Zonta International’s global “Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women” 16 Days of Activism campaign. During the distribution, community members were invited to join in voicing “Zonta Says NO,” reinforcing awareness of Zonta’s mission and values while strengthening community connection.
