HKMU Golden Z Club Wins Award for Anti-Sexual Harassment Video

The HKMU Golden Z Club captured two major awards in the Safe Spaces For All: Anti-Sexual Harassment 60-Second Video Contest, winning both the Champion (Higher Education) title and the Most Popular Entry on Instagram (Higher Education).

The one-minute film, produced in just days, impressed judges and audiences with its creative storytelling and urgent message on the many forms of sexual harassment. The project began when HKMU mentor Irene introduced the contest at a Golden Z Club meeting—just two days before the deadline. Club Secretary and video editor Kary led the production, which was filmed in two to three hours and quickly edited for submission. “We were both surprised and thrilled,” Kary said. “Completing the project under such tight constraints and receiving recognition was truly rewarding.”

The video tackled the complex realities of sexual harassment, from physical contact and voyeurism to verbal abuse and explicit materials. Limited to one minute, the team focused on two main scenarios while using the final 10 seconds to underscore additional examples, ensuring audiences understood the breadth of the problem. The film carried a strong message of diversity, equity and inclusion, stressing that harassment can affect anyone regardless of gender, age or background. To challenge stereotypes, the team portrayed male-on-male harassment—an often-overlooked issue. They also drew inspiration from other entries, including a secondary school film on inappropriate behavior disguised as “friendly gestures.”

Reflecting the club’s multicultural makeup, with members from Hong Kong, mainland China and abroad, the production shifted from Cantonese-only dialogue to include Mandarin and English, supported by bilingual subtitles. This adaptation broadened its accessibility to a global audience.

The awards have motivated the HKMU Golden Z Club to continue raising awareness on critical social issues. The team expressed gratitude to their mentor, voters and supporters who made their success possible. “This success belongs to all of us,” Kary said. “We hope our work will encourage more people to recognize the seriousness of sexual harassment and to practice DEI principles in everyday life. Moving forward, we aim to bring more positive energy to the community.”
