Zonta Club of Punta del Este-Maldonado Hosts Earth Day event

In celebration of Earth Day, the Zonta Club of Punta del Este-Maldonado, Uruguay, partnered with the Native Fauna Breeding Station (ECFA), an institution of the Maldonado Department, to host a “Zonta Says NOW” event focused on climate action and awareness.

Held at ECFA, located in the municipality of Piriápolis, the event invited the public to reflect on the urgency of protecting and responsibly using the planet’s natural resources—an essential step for the survival of all, particularly women and girls, who are disproportionately affected by climate change.

Participants learned how environmental degradation and climate change impact lives globally and locally, with an emphasis on how women often bear the brunt of these consequences. As part of the program, attendees were encouraged to mobilize and advocate for sustainable practices and gender-inclusive climate solutions.

A highlight of the event was the symbolic planting of an anacauita tree, a species native to Uruguay, reinforcing the connection between local biodiversity and climate resilience.

The event received strong support from the community, with attendance from local leaders including the mayor of Piriápolis, the ECFA director and staff, Zonta members and members of the public. Media coverage further amplified the visibility of Zonta’s environmental advocacy and mission to empower women through service and advocacy.
