Zonta Club I of Colombo brings clean water access to women in Thanthirimale
In a transformative effort to address water scarcity, the Zonta Club I of Colombo, Sri Lanka, implemented a sustainable project to provide access to potable water for women and their families in the rural village of Thanthirimale in the Anuradhapura District.
Previously, women in the community endured long daily walks to fetch water. To alleviate this burden and improve quality of life, the club funded the construction of deep wells to serve marginalized households. The new wells not only supply water for household use but also support home gardens and small-scale farming, helping women generate income and improve food security.
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with village committees, community police and the local temple, ensuring long-term sustainability. The village committee now oversees well maintenance, manages electricity costs and maintains a shared water storage tank.
Access to water has made such a difference in the lives of these women and children. The continued communication with the village and updates on how the project has empowered families to build a more sustainable livelihood.
