Birthing Kit Assembly Day
Birthing Kit Assembly Day brings together club members and community volunteers to assemble Clean Birthing Kits designed to support safe childbirth in underserved regions.
During the event, volunteers worked in small groups at trestle tables to assemble kits containing essential items for a clean birth, including a plastic sheet, soap, gloves, cords, a sterile scalpel blade and gauze. Compact and biodegradable, each kit is designed to be simple yet life-saving.
Assembly Days have been held by more than 100 Zonta clubs across Australia, with more than 100,000 volunteers participating. The initiative also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of Zonta’s mission and engage potential new members through hands-on service.
The project began within Zonta in 1999 and later grew into the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia in 2006. Since then, more than 3 million kits have been distributed across 30 countries. Zonta clubs in Australia contribute approximately 65% of all kits produced, with additional support from schools, corporations, universities, churches and other service organizations.
Zonta clubs pay $5 per kit, covering materials, transportation to assembly sites and distribution through accredited field partners. The kits are primarily distributed to women in remote and underserved areas, including refugee camps, internally displaced persons settlements and post-conflict regions, where access to trained medical professionals is limited.
Field partners provide education on the proper use of the kits and safe waste disposal. More than 10,000 traditional midwives have been trained across five countries through programs accompanying kit distribution.
Through the initiative, clubs across Australia, such as the Zonta Club of Adelaide Inc, Bunbury, student clubs and more, are building a better world for women and girls.
