Zonta Club of Armidale Inc celebrates 50 years
The Zonta Club of Armidale Inc, Australia, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala dinner attended by current and past members, Zontians and community representatives. The event featured reflections on the club's early history from charter member Judith and a presentation from Dr. Amy Moss on the theme "Zonta Says NOW." The presentation focused on research related to chickens and food waste.
The club played a crucial role in establishing the first women's refuge in regional NSW during the late 1970s. Judith shared the club’s significant efforts involved in gathering resources, convincing the community and council and relocating a house to serve as the refuge.
Continuing its support for the local women’s shelter, the club recently donated AU$5,000 to the shelter’s food project, following a previous donation of AU$2,000 for supplies. This initiative provides 400-500 meals weekly to individuals facing food insecurity, allowing parents to focus their limited resources on essential expenses such as rent and utilities while ensuring their children have consistent meals. The meals are distributed in the local area, fostering dignity and relief for families in need.
