  • Navigating Economic and Cultural Impact of the New Normal: Trends and Innovations in Combating Human Trafficking - 11:00 AM -12:30 PM CEST
    • Organized by the Zonta Club of Pasig, District 17
As the COVID-19 pandemic leaves a trail of economic poverty, mental health problems, educational disruption and other health-related issues, the world tries to pick up efforts to restore pre-pandemic gains. However, social organizations face the reality that the pandemic has eroded decades of social development gains and magnified pre-existing social issues such as poverty, gender discrimination, modern slavery and the trafficking of women.

Global and local efforts to end modern slavery and trafficking face new challenges such as, but not limited to: breakdown of family values and cohesion; the rise of the number of young people engaged in social media, making them vulnerable to online sexual abuse and exploitation; the lack of access of communities to government programs and services other than health-related programs; the long-term loss of jobs of parents and family members affecting their resiliency to economic shocks; and challenges in the reintegration of survivors and even by returning migrant workers as they face volatile local job markets, extreme poverty, debt-bondage, and social discrimination in their communities.

The pandemic is a social mirror that surfaced our deepest values and aspirations as a people. The fight to end human trafficking must remain a priority if humanity must move forward with hope, a sense of justice and equality.
