Remarkable international justice advocate shares her story

Indai Sajor is a feminist activist, humanitarian advisor and the convener of the Women’s International War Crimes Tribunal on Japan’s Military Sexual Slavery, in the case of comfort women. This landmark initiative recognized sexual slavery as a crime against humanity. For more than a decade, she led the comfort women movement for justice, bringing together survivors, legal experts and advocates from 10 Asian countries to challenge traditional notions of justice and amplify survivor voices.

For Indai, justice is not about closure for women but about process, about naming, remembering, and giving these victims of war back their voices. After decades of inaction by states and international law, survivors and activists created their own forum, establishing new standards for accountability and dignity that continue to shape global responses to wartime sexual violence.

Indai also contributed to the Women’s Caucus for Gender Justice, which successfully advocated for the inclusion of gender-based crimes in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, helping establish the first permanent international court with a comprehensive framework on gender crimes.

Today, Indai is engaged in advancing the 2026 Crimes Against Humanity Treaty Convention negotiations, working to ensure gender justice remains central to emerging global legal frameworks. With more than 30 years of experience across conflict zones worldwide, her work continues to address conflict-related sexual violence and humanitarian crises.

She has received the Rockefeller Fellowship in Human Security from the City University of New York Graduate School and the Dame Nita Barrow Award from the University of Toronto. She was also recognized as an inaugural member of the Gender Justice Legacy Wall by Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice for her contributions to advancing international gender justice.

Indai met with Lynne Foley OAM, host of the Remarkable Women, Powerful Stories podcast, to discuss her continued pursuit of justice, truth-telling and survivor-centered dignity.
